Building
Homes. Building Hope.
The Concept
What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is an independent, not-for-profit housing program
dedicated to the elimination of substandard and poverty housing by
building homes in partnership with families in need of a brighter
future.
Habitat provides simple, decent,
affordable housing for those who would not qualify or be able to
afford a conventional mortgage. The Habitat program is about home
ownership and a long-term solution designed to break the poverty
cycle.
How does the Habitat program
work?
Through volunteer labour, efficient management and tax-deductible
donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates
houses with the help of homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses
are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with
affordable, no-interest mortgages held by Habitat. The homeowners’
mortgage payments go into a revolving fund that is seed to build more
houses.
Habitat for Humanity is not a
give-away program. In addition to mortgage payments, each partner
family invest hundreds of hours of their own labour, or “sweat equity”
into the building of their house and the houses of others.
Habitats for Humanity ReStores are environmentally conscious. We are
always on the lookout for new ways to recycle and save you money too!
The Midland ReStore is a place where you can purchase quality used and
new building materials and household items. You can also help by
donating, volunteering and bringing in your aluminium cans, Scrap
metal and Electronic waste. Help support our local ReStore and help
